Advanced Biological Sciences MRes

  • Programme duration: Full-time: 12 months
  • Programme start: Autumn 2021
  • Entry requirements: You will need a 2:1 Honours degree or higher in a relevant Biological Sciences subject. The normal expectation is that students who have completed an MRes will progress to a PhD degree.

About us

University of Liverpool's

Institute of Integrative Biology

As an Institute devoted to Integrative Biology, we span the range of biosciences from the fine-scale resolution of biomolecular structure through the genome-wide analysis of cells and organisms, to the evolution and ecology of organisms in their natural environment.

Underpinning this diversity, we offer World class facilities and infrastructure for research, and superb links to internationally excellent partners in both the academic and industrial sectors.

The Institute is managed in three departments:

  • Biochemistry;
  • Functional and Comparative Genomics ;
  • Evolution, Ecology and Behaviour .

Our research focuses on the following themes:

Dynamics and management of host-microbe interactions

This theme investigates host-microbe interactions across scales, from the molecular interplay between microbe and host, through to modelling the changes in parasite frequency in populations.

Mechanisms of Cell Signalling

The theme of molecular basis of therapeutic targeting deals with the identification and study of key biological macromolecules that influence disease processes, or change in response to pathological conditions.

From genomes to biological systems

Utilising modern technology which is enabling the study of genetic differences between individuals (genomics), the nature of proteins encoded by those genes (proteomics), and the flux of chemicals within cells (metabolomics).

Adaptation to environmental change

The world's natural and agricultural resources face major challenges from a changing climate and a growing human population. We aim to understand the fundamental biology of how organisms respond to environmental change.
