Clinical Sciences MRes

  • Programme duration: Full-time: 12 months   Part-time: 24 months
  • Programme start: September 2022
  • Entry requirements: A good first BSc Honours degree in a relevant Biological Sciences discipline, (2:1 Hons or higher), previous MRes or MSc, or a medical, veterinary or dental qualification. Applicants with a high 2:2 will be considered on a case by case basis.

Overview

The aim of the MRes is to provide training at Masters level for intercalating medical undergraduates, medical, biomedical and biological science graduates, career academics-in-training and allied health professions and sport science, so meeting regional and national demands for research-oriented skills in these disciplines.

Please note, the MRes in Clinical Sciences is currently being revalidated and is therefore subject to change.

A key element of the programme design is the development of relevant, appropriate research skills, in addition to a systematic understanding and critical awareness of the research process at the interface of basic science and clinical research..

The programme prepares the student for doctoral research training and satisfies the criteria of the Research Councils for Master of Research training.

Programme objectives

  • Gain knowledge and understanding of clinical sciences research and how it relates to health, disease and therapeutic interventions.
  • Conduct independent research through practical experience in formulating appropriate research strategies, methods, data collection and analysis via a one-year long project.
  • Develop the capacity for individual work and teamwork in an interdisciplinary research environment
  • Provide training in transferable skills, techniques, and knowledge appropriate to postgraduate research students at Masters level
  • Develop communication skills both oral and written to enable research debate (with scientific and lay audiences) and peer reviewed journal publications
  • Equip the student to take the first postgraduate steps leading to future roles in biomedical research in the clinical, industrial, and public sectors
  • Prepare the student for entry onto a PhD programme.

The programme is built around the research interests of the Institute of Life Course and Medical Sciences and consists of five programme pathways (listed below) reflecting the world-class research being carried out in these areas within the Institute.

  • Clinical Sciences (Women and Children’s Health)

During the course you will undertake a one year long research project with academics (both clinical and non-clinical) from the Institute. linked to one of the pathways highlighted above.  Projects may be carried out in laboratories on campus, or based in local NHS trusts including Alder Hey Children’s hospital, Liverpool Women’s hospital, St Paul’s Eye hospital and the Royal Liverpool hospital. There is also an option to complete an online research project. You will graduate with the pathway branding in your degree certificate, for example MRes in Clinical Sciences (Cardiovascular and Metabolic Medicine) [or another appropriate pathway].

The programme has a modular structure and is delivered by lectures, tutorials, seminars, workshops and individual supervision for the research projects.
