Public engagement grants awarded in Health and Life Sciences

The University’s Faculty of Health and Life Sciences is funding 13 projects as part of its new Public Engagement Grants Scheme.
Launched in October, the initiative is supported by the Faculty’s Wellcome Trust Institutional Strategic Support Fund and offers grants of up to £2,000 for researchers to develop and run their own public engagement activity.
More broadly, the scheme is part of the Faculty’s wider public engagement programme, which aims to encourage and support more researchers to get involved with public engagement through the provision of training and opportunities.
Following the first round of applications, grants have been awarded to a range of projects that include supporting patient groups to shape the direction of research projects; the development of a Pets, Vets and Datasets activity for Edinburgh International Science Festival; the creation of science themed mini-magazines; data science workshops in schools; and a Meet the Scientists on Tour event.
Laura Winters, Faculty of Health and Life Sciences Public Engagement Officer, said: “We were pleased to receive so many exciting and creative proposals that offer a real opportunity for meaningful public engagement.
“The funded projects will all feature as part of a Public Engagement Showcase event this summer, which will give others within the University the chance to hear about the projects and public engagement within the Faculty more generally.”
