The University is recognised as having one of England’s highest success rates in supervising students through to their doctoral award, by the Higher Education Funding Council for England. We highly value the active role our postgraduate researchers play in contributing to our success and supporting our research programmes, which attract £115 million a year in external grants.

Innovative doctoral training

Our choice-led approach allows you the flexibility and freedom to tailor your development programme to meet your needs, circumstances and aspirations.

Support from a thriving global community

Enhancing both the student experience and the University’s research culture, and supporting the development of the world’s most talented future research leaders.

Employability and entrepreneurship

We deliver a tailored package of careers inspiration and skills development. We place appropriate emphasis on meeting the expectations of employers in developing you as a postgraduate researcher, and in providing the skills for graduates to thrive as entrepreneurs in their own right.

We have many professional partnerships which ensure we can offer high-profile placements in international, national and local companies enhancing your employability.

Our in-house development programmes will develop the skills essential for your future via on-campus events and workshops, online options and self-selected activities. Our development aims link closely with those of VITAE, the dedicated organisation that works to realise the potential of researchers through transforming their professional and career development.

Many of our doctoral students progress into academic careers. However, nearly half of UK doctoral graduates move into careers outside of higher education. We arm our postgraduate researchers with the skills and acumen needed to succeed in achieving their own career aspirations.
