Martha Vidor Scholarship for Music Composition
The Martha Vidor Scholarship in Music Composition seeks to fund postgraduate study for talented UK composers.
In each academic year, one scholarship will be made available to a UK student progressing to either the MA Composition for Film, TV and Games or an MRes Music with a composition focus. The scholarship takes the form of a partial tuition fee reduction, worth £5,000.
Application process
There’s no separate application process for the scholarship. You should use the standard MA application form or the MRes application research proposal to identify how you expect the programme to allow you to fulfil your educational, research, or professional ambitions in music.
The work submitted should demonstrate your compositional approach and may be presented in a form appropriate to your area of practice:
- For film and media composers, the example may be a single audiovisual clip or a showreel/montage containing up to 3 examples of your work, with a total duration of approximately 5 minutes
- For composers working in other areas, the example may be a single complete composition or an extract from a longer work, normally of approximately 5 minutes' duration. Where appropriate, a score may be submitted alongside or instead of an audio or video recording
- Audio or video materials may be hosted on YouTube, Vimeo, Dropbox, ReelCrafter or another suitable hosting service
- Please ensure that materials don’t require a password to access, that links won’t expire during the selection process, and that there are no other restrictions that might prevent the panel from accessing your work
- Submissions may include scores (PDF), notation files (for example, Sibelius or MuseScore), audio recordings or renders, or video, as appropriate to the compositional practice being presented
- Any multi-channel audio work should also be supplied in a stereo version for assessment.
Conditions
- Applicants must be UK students and able to demonstrate this.
- The eligibility of applicants will be considered as part of the standard application procedure. There is no separate application process for the scholarship.
- As part of the standard application process, in addition to the musical example/s applicants may be expected to provide a sample of their written work.
- The successful candidate will keep the University regularly updated on their progress and achievements.
- The successful candidate will be required to assist in the promotion of the scholarship and the MA Composition for Film, TV and Games or MRes Music programme as appropriate and when requested to do so.
- The scholarship will take the form of a partial tuition fee reduction, worth £5,000, against the full-time UK tuition fee for that particular year.
- The scholarship is conditional on successful academic progress and demonstration of professional behaviour. The panel reserves the right to withdraw or suspend the Scholarship if there are any reasons for concern.
- Due to the nature of the award (i.e. tuition fee waiver) it cannot be claimed in conjunction with another scholarship or bursary which constitutes a reduction on tuition fees (e.g. the UoL Graduate Loyalty Advancement Scholarship).
- No cash alternative is available. Should the successful student decide to permanently withdraw from their studies, the award will be forfeited. A student who wishes to suspend their studies and resume them at a later date will be able to claim the remainder of the scholarship on a pro-rata basis, depending on the proportion of the programme already studied.
Applicants are required to apply for the MA Composition for Film, TV and Games or MRes programme by 20 July 2027. The successful candidate will be informed by 1 August 2027 or soon thereafter.
