BGS, through the BGS University funding Initiative (BUFI), currently supports the doctoral training of over 75 PGRs at around 30 ROs, with approximately 15-20 new starts per year. BGS, therefore, has the capacity to be involved in multiple DTPs at a variety of levels. In the Manchester-Liverpool DTP, BGS will offer CASE-plus support. In addition to supporting the PGR, BGS will also provide the RTSG for the doctoral training project.

The PGR will have a BGS member of staff as a secondary supervisor and they will have priority access to BGS technical training in the same way as the PGRs that BGS is hosting. The PGRs will be expected to spend at least 25% of their time at BGS. BGS will not be involved in the management of the DTP and delivery of specialist and cohort training. However, depending on capacity, there will be opportunities for cohort PGRs to access BGS training, facilities and placements.

To ensure an integrated, balanced and sustainable portfolio of projects across multiple DTPs and independently monitor student progression, BGS will continue to run the BUFI Steering Committee, comprising non-BGS scientists and stakeholders, the BUFI manager and the BGS Director of Science and Technology. This will also ensure equitable and fair doctoral training opportunities for all the DTPs in which BGS is involved.

BGS expects to support 3-5 CASE studentships over the lifetime of the DTP
