Viva outcomes

For the degrees of PhD, MPhil and MD, examiners can recommend:

  1. Pass

  2. Pass subject to minor modifications [NB: modifications to be made usually within three months of the oral examination but can be submitted earlier than the stated deadline]

  3. Pass subject to major modifications [NB: only applicable to 1st submissions made on or after 2 September 2019.  Major modifications to be made usually within six months of the oral examination but can be submitted earlier than the stated deadline]
  4. Resubmission [revisions to be made usually within one year of the date of the oral examination]

  5. To award MPhil subject to, if required, amendments to the thesis [for PhD and MD students only]

  6. Resubmission for the award of MPhil [For PhD and MD students only. The revisions to be made usually within one year of the date of the oral examination but can be submitted earlier than the stated deadline]

  7. Fail

Note: When considering a resubmitted thesis examiners can only use recommendations 1,2, 5 or 7 . A candidate may only make two applications for a research degree award.

What happens if the examiners recommend Pass?

You will receive an email from the LDC Student Experience Team advising you how to submit your final thesis.

What happens if the examiners recommend Pass subject to minor modifications

It is the responsibility of the Internal Examiner to provide you promptly with a list of the required corrections. Once minor modifications have been made to the thesis you should send it directly to the examiner(s) for their approval. You will receive an email from the PGR Student Team when the examiners have confirmed the modifications have been made to their satisfaction. This email will provide you with information on how to submit your final thesis.

What happens if the examiners recommend Pass subject to major modifications

For theses submitted from the 2nd September 2019 onwards examiners will have the option to recommend major modifications as an outcome for first submissions. This will mean that you have 6 months to revise the thesis. For futher details about the implementation of the change and what it means to you, please read the Major Modifications FAQs document.

 

What happens if the examiners recommend Resubmission?

It is the responsibility of the internal examiner to provide you promptly with a list of the required corrections. Candidates who receive a Resubmission recommendation will be written to by their Faculty Link Officer formally notifying them of their resubmission deadline and fee. You will have one year from the date of the viva to submit their revised thesis.  Once you have completed your revisions, normally two copies of your thesis are required to be resubmitted to the Student Administration Centre in the Foundation Building along with a elecctronic version emailed as a PDF to pgrs@liverpool.ac.uk. You will have a second viva, which will be attended by an independant chair.  Your Internal Examiner will contact you to arrange a date and time.
