The Squash Club accommodates all standards, from county and regional players to players that had never picked up a racket before university - everyone is welcome. Squash is a racket sport played by two (singles) or four players (doubles) in a four-walled court with a small, hollow rubber ball. The players must alternate in striking the ball with their racket and hit the ball onto the playable surfaces of the four walls of the court. The winner is the first to score 11 points by moving your opponent around the court. Squash is part of the Commonwealth Games and is considered one of the healthiest sports in the world! Many famous celebrities play squash including Hugh Jackman, Olly Murs, Roger Federer, Eddie Murphy, Sachin Tendulkar, Daniel Ricciardo and Mark Wahlberg.
Want to play for a team?
Team coaching takes place on a Monday evening, as well as weekly fitness sessions for anyone in the club. These are both led by our excellent coach and are very well attended. Last season we had three men's teams and two women's teams in the British University and Colleges Sport (BUCS) leagues. A team of 10 players also went to Nottingham in December for the annual BUCS individuals - a fun weekend for all involved.
Looking for something a bit less serious? Or new to Squash?
Our social squash sessions offer the perfect opportunity to get back into squash, play for the first time or come and have a game with friends. They take place on a Sunday evening and are the perfect way to end the week.
Beginner's coaching takes place on a Friday evening and is also run by our outstanding coach. Join the club and come along and find out what it's all about. We have rackets and balls you can borrow so all you need to bring is yourself! New this year we are also introducing internal box leagues for members of the club. These games can be arranged in your own time or you can make use of the social squash courts to play matches. A great way to meet new people and play in a competitive but relaxed environment.
And finally…the socials!
We are always a ‘work hard, play hard’ club and have a busy social calendar. Standout events include our Christmas and End-of Season meals, bowling and of course fancy dress AU nights.
So if you’ve been playing Squash for years, have never tried it before or are somewhere in between (like most of us!) there’ll be someone to play at a similar level to you. Come along to our taster sessions in September or feel free to contact one of the committee. To find out more join our facebook group (UOL Squash Club), follow or Instagram (uolsquashclub) or get in touch on one of the email addresses.
