The University of Liverpool has been in partnership with Royal Liverpool Golf Club (host to the 2006 and 2014 Open Championship) for over 50 years. With our players gaining membership to the prestigious course it is not difficult to see why many talented golfers are drawn to the University of Liverpool.
Our mixed (male and female) team matches involve the strongest 6 available players on the day, the squad is now 25 members including scholars as we now offer a second team for players above a 6 handicap. Matches are Wednesday afternoons and training takes place on Monday evenings at the local Liverpool Driving Range.
Chris Crowder was the team coach this year and we will be looking to continue that relationship in forthcoming years. The range is 10 minutes from the university and all players receive a discount on balls whenever they practice.
The team ranges in handicap from +3 to 6. We expect players off handicaps 4 and below to be practicing each week, but with a membership at an Open Championship course that is not difficult. Players that have ever represented at county level or handicaps below 3 should contact us and apply for a scholarship. We are currently looking at courses to host players with handicaps that do not make the squad in order to set up a golfing society.
We compete in BUCS leagues and knock-out cup matches. League matches are both home and away so there are plenty of team trips to other courses in places such as York and Leeds. There is also the opportunity for players off 4 and below to compete in individual BUCS events at top courses such as Woodhall Spa. These events count towards an order of merit competition to play in the British University Championship, which is a WAGR ( world amateur golf ranking ) qualifying event. All BUCS events, individual and matches; are scratch matchplay or gross scores.
We host our own competitions also. This year we held the first University Scratch Trophy event which is open for all squad players to enter. At the end of the year is the Alumni competition and evening, where all past players are invited back to play in the biggest day in our golfing calendar.
The cost of the Royal Liverpool membership, coaching, competitions and kit changes each year depending on sponsorship. For non scholarship squad players this year the fee was £150. Most players certainly get their moneys worth considering a single round at Royal Liverpool will cost you more than that as a non member.
