Staff Golf Day at Formby

A number of football, cricket and golf events involving University of Liverpool staff took place during 2012. In addition our staff squash team are well established members of the North West Counties Squash League.

Since 2011 a staff football team have played other University staff teams from Leeds, JMU, Hope and Chester. To date the record reads: played seven, won five and lost two. Led by Dominic Ventre (School of Law and Social Justice) and Christian Keegan (Human Resources) they are looking ahead to this summer’s fixtures and will welcome new players. Age is no barrier nor is lack of skill!

The 5-a-side league in 2012 was won by the “aptly” named Fatzio who were captained by Simon Watmough from the School of Medicine. His team mates were: Dominic Ventre, Christian Keegan, Paul Duvall (Centre for Lifelong Learning), Rob Armstrong (Human Resources), Chris Harman (Finance) and Andrew Duckworth (Molecular and Clinical Cancer).

The next 5-a-side league, open to staff and students, begins on 31st January. For more details contact Ryan Swinney at

The staff squash team have a long history at the University and have returned to Division Three of the North West Squash League following last year’s promotion. This season is proving a more difficult one than the last and new players are welcome. For further details contact Professor Chris Lucas at

Staff Golf Days were resurrected in November 2007 and continue to go from strength to strength. Over the last 18 months women golfers have joined us on these days which now average 40 for each event. Individual events all contribute to “The Road to Caldy” which is a cumulative golf event for staff and guests. It has taken place over two years and six staff events with the denouement at Caldy in March.

In 2012 our Golf Days took place at Wallasey, Frodsham and Formby. Past and present staff members Gregor Govan, Asaf Niaz, John Bungey, Stuart Wade, Chris Knighting and Pete Sampara continue to battle it out for the Race To Title whilst Tony Clarke, Ray Newnes and Dave Horton are providing the substantial challenge from the guests.

The next Staff Golf Day is Friday 1st March 2013 at Caldy Golf Club.

On 13th June 2012 at Llanymynech Golf Club near Oswestry staff played the annual Golf match with our University of Birmingham counterparts. Liverpool were looking to retain the trophy having won emphatically in 2011 at Henlle Park. A 3-3 draw was sufficient to keep the trophy in the North West with the Sampara/ Marten, Wade/ Jenkins and Lycett/Govan pairs winning their matches. All our other pairs lost on the last hole so a clean sweep was not far away.

In June of 2013 we will be hosting this fixture at a course in Shropshire.

The 52nd Staff tour to Cambridgeshire took place in late July in glorious weather. Liverpool played four matches in total against our traditional rivals winning three and having the better of a draw against the traditionally strong March Town Cricket Club.

Notable performances came with bat and ball and Lincoln Harrison (ex German and School Relations) toured again in his 80th year. Lincoln toured in 1961; the very first year of this annual and continuous highlight. Other staff members who performed with credit were Dr Dave Smith and Barry Campbell from Medicine. Former Sports Administrator, Guy Lane remains a key member of our party with his left arm spin and particularly in the country pub singing challenges.

The tour ended with two of Liverpool's members taking in The Merry Wives of Windsor in St John’s College gardens. Clearly a sporting and cultural experience to add to the diary!
