University wins Varsity for eighth year in a row

The University of Liverpool has taken the Varsity title for the eighth year in a row after battling it out last week with sports teams from Liverpool John Moores University.

The overall score was 91-69, with some tense moments across the 3 days. Particular highlights were the men’s football both first and second team securing wins, with a brilliant 4-1 result for the first team.

On Monday night after a very close and intense game Men’s Rugby Union won with the last kick of the game with a score of 13-11. The Women’s Handball match also saw a nail-biting finish in favour of University of Liverpool with a very close score of 27-20.

Tuesday night saw the Netball fixture close the competition, with all eyes on the first and second team at LJMU Sports Centre in front of a huge roaring crowd. The pressure was definitely on but the second team won a very close game 41-39 and firsts won 49-42 to secure the Varsity title.

Support the annual Christie Championships

This year The University of Liverpool will be hosting the historic Christie Championships for the first time since 2018.

With over 30 sports fixtures across the city, the University of Liverpool will go head to head against Universities of Leeds and Manchester on Wednesday 22 March.

This is the 137th year of the competition, making it the second oldest inter-university rivalry in the UK after Oxford and Cambridge.

The competition is proudly sponsored for another year by Aldi, who will provide information on the Aldi Graduate scheme along with some fun competitions to win exciting prizes.

Come along and cheer for Team Sport Liverpool at any of the locations listed on the fixture list and join us for the all-important presentation at the Guild of Students from 6.30pm to announce the overall winner of this year’s competition.
