Movember are the leading charity changing the face of men’s health, by taking on three of the biggest health issues facing men: mental health and suicide prevention, prostate cancer and testicular cancer.

This year, our Athletic Union raised an astronomical £43,590.47, with our clubs showing excellent collaboration on men's health hosting challenges, events and growing moustaches throughout the month of November.

As a department we also hosted a series of mental health advice and guidance drop in sessions, for any staff or students to come and have a chat. We also teamed up with Brownlow Health and hosted a cancer advice afternoon to highlight the symptoms of testicular and prostate cancer.

Toni Shaw, Digital Marketing Officer at Sport Liverpool said: ‘Our sports clubs really pull together this time of year to organise events and challenges, and each year the campaign gets bigger and better. As a department we are proud of what our clubs have achieved throughout this campaign, and the funds raised will fuel ground-breaking men’s health projects around the world. If we’ve helped just one person talk about their mental health, or someone go to their GP for a chat about any cancer symptoms then we’ve done our job. It’s a staple in the calendar and something I hope will continue for years to come’.

Here is just a small snippet of how some of our clubs got involved:

  • The top fundraising club was men's cricket raising a whopping £8,250 and the top individual fundraiser was the AU Vice President Holly Bacon who raised £645.
  • Men's cricket smashed their fundraising target by hosting many events including a 24-hour cricket match, hiking Snowdon and moving for Movember. The committee got involved and got soaked, charging people £1 to throw three soaking sponges at them outside the sports centre.
  • The cycling and triathlon clubs did a sponsored 24-hour spinathon also outside of the sports centre and cycled 3110.75KM, that's 33KM/hour per person, an incredible achievement.
  • Olivia Smith, Maisie Jefferson, Elkana Hutton, and Jasmine Udomjit-Taylor from LivSnow participated in Move for Movember and travelled 685km between them by either running, walking or cycling to raise money.
  • James Ransome, Ollie and Charlie Stammers from strength and conditioning beat the 2.5kg calzone challenge in Amalia to raise money. A fantastic effort, Charlie even asked for ice cream afterwards!
  • Cheerleading and dance did a variety of different fundraisers including a 'bring a lad, dress as a dad' themed training session which was great fun.
  • Women's football also went all out, hosting a 'bing-mo' night which raised £197 alone, running 60+km as a club and having a 24-hour 5 a side game.
  • Lots of bro's from all clubs grew moustaches (some more successfully than others!) and raised a lot for a good cause. 12 of our clubs also came together to pose for our Team Sport Liverpool cheeky Movember charity calendar to celebrate all the fundraising done during the month! They are available to purchase from the Sports & Fitness Centre reception for £5 with all profits being donated to Movember!
