About the event

The rapid development of new technologies has raised important issues regarding their social, cultural and political power. From not only the economic and ideological, but also environmental consequences of cryptocurrencies, over questions of responsibility and race and gender bias when it comes to the many uses of artificial intelligence, to the problematic impact of deepfakes and filters: understanding both the sociological importance but as well technological workings of contemporary technologies becomes increasingly important.

This event is organised by the International Criminological Research Unit (ICRU), a research cluster within the Department of Sociology, Social Policy, and Criminology at the University of Liverpool. It provides a platform for experts – both academic and those working in the tech industry – to share critical reflections and knowledge with a curious and interested audience of how new technologies ‘work’ and of their wider political impact and social and political consequences. The event is designed to engage members of the public, students, practitioners and academics with an interest in the area.

This is a free hybrid event. It can be attended at the SLSJ Building Event Space at the University of Liverpool campus, or online via Zoom.
