Please join us to celebrate the launch of our new book Inside the English Education Lab: critical qualitative and ethnographic perspectives on the academies experiment.

England has garnered a global reputation as a key proponent of education policy reforms in academisation, practiced through public-private partnership, claims of greater school autonomy and a centralised governance structure. Inside the English education lab counters the assertion that academisation improves educational inequalities. Contrarily, it evidences the ways in which academisation retrenches rather than reforms such inequality. The collection also contributes to discussions on critical qualitative methodologies and draws on these research tools to illuminate and interrogate the everyday life of England’s academised educational landscape. It provides a valuable viewpoint that reaches beyond policy claims and rhetoric by focusing on the everyday and often ambiguous practices operating within England’s rapidly academising education system.

We are delighted to be joined by Prof. Helen Gunter, who has written extensively on academisation and educational policy. The editors and Prof. Gunter will reflect on the collection. There will also be a wine reception.
