University hosts EDF Energy Study Day at Central Teaching Laboratories

A delegation from EDF Energy Nuclear New Build visited The University of Liverpool’s Central Teaching Laboratories for a one day CPD course. The event was jointly hosted by the Radiation Protection Office and the Department of Physics and aimed to give an insight into techniques used, for example, for legacy waste categorisation and assessment of contaminated land.
The EDF Energy participants had lectures on gamma spectroscopy from Dr David Joss and liquid scintillation counting from Professor Pete Cole. The course also included practical sessions run by Dr Carl Unsworth and Dr Helen Cauldbeck on basic gamma spectroscopy and liquid scintillation counting with equipment kindly provided by LabLogic Systems Ltd for the day.
Professor Cole (Radiation Protection Adviser and Radioactive Waste Adviser for the University) said “It is very exciting to welcome EDF Energy NNB to our University and I am thrilled we are able to support the development of their staff. The day has been a tremendous success and I am keen to collaborate with EDF on projects that no doubt will have valuable industrial applications in the nuclear sector in the further.”
