Professor Kate Black wins Academic Entrepreneur at KE Awards

Kate Black, Professor of Additive Manufacturing at the University‘s School of Engineering, is the winner of the Academic Entrepreneur category at the PraxisAuril Knowledge Exchange Awards 2022.
The Academic Entrepreneur award recognises outstanding individuals who have worked with their KE office to translate their research to solve real world problems.
Professor Black was announced as the winner at the KE Awards ceremony held at The Monastery in Manchester on 29th November with Emma Nolan, Head of the University's Intellectual Property (IP) Commercialisation Team, accepting the award on Professor Black's behalf.
Professor Black's research focuses on the development of novel functional materials using binder jet printing for the manufacture of metals and ceramics.
In 2019, she co-founded the University spin-out Meta Additive Limited to commercialise a novel chemical approach to 3D printing that is capable of manipulating materials at a molecular level. Meta Additive was acquired in 2021 by Desktop Metal, Inc.
She said: “I am delighted to have won the Academic Entrepreneur award. However, I could not have done it without the help of the University’s Knowledge Exchange team and all the hard work the research team put in to making Meta Additive a success.”
Professor Black’s nomination was supported by the Research Partnership and Innovation (RPI) Directorate.
The University is a member of PraxisAuril, the professional association for Knowledge Exchange practitioners.
