The University of Liverpool has joined VaxHub, a major UK vaccines manufacturing research network which aims to improve global health through more sustainable and accessible vaccine innovation.
VaxHub is a network co-led by UCL and the University of Oxford, bringing together two programmes: VaxHub Sustainable and VaxHub Global. Launched in 2023, the programmes connect leading experts in vaccinology science, synthetic biology, biochemistry, materials science, and systems engineering. Their research is not focused on a single disease but instead aims to develop and improve a range of vaccine platform technologies.
Joining the network gives the University of Liverpool a formal role within both VaxHub Global and VaxHub Sustainable through the project partner framework. Liverpool will contribute expertise in vaccine analysis, ensuring that vaccines are safe, effective and consistent; detection of impurities that can affect vaccine performance and the development of tests that link vaccine quality to how it behaves in the body.
Professor Neill Liptrott, who negotiated Liverpool’s membership, commented: “We’re delighted to join the VaxHub Network and look forward to collaborating with partners across the consortium. Liverpool has strong research programmes in infection, immunity, advanced therapeutics and biomanufacturing, including initiatives such as the Intracellular Drug Delivery Centre and the BRITE programme, which align closely with the Hub’s goals. Our work on programmable innate immunity will be a useful addition to an increasingly hot topic. Being part of VaxHub creates new opportunities to connect our expertise with national and international partners working to advance vaccine technologies and manufacturing.”
Liverpool’s involvement strengthens the UK’s collective effort to accelerate vaccine innovation and ensure future vaccines are developed efficiently, safely, and equitably.
