The University of Liverpool has been confirmed as a member of the new Turing University Network launched today (April 3rd 2023) by The Alan Turing Institute as a new way of working with universities across the UK.

The Alan Turing Institute is the national institute for data science and artificial intelligence and the Turing University Network forms part of its new strategy aimed at using data science and AI for social good.

This network will support the Institute in achieving its three ambitious goals: advance world-class research and apply it to national and global challenges, build skills for the future, and drive an informed public conversation.

The University has significant research excellence and a track record of translation in the area of data science and AI, which form part of the University’s Digital research theme.

Research within Digital is recognised as world leading and enables the transformation of society and industry through the generation, communication and processing of data. University researchers are tackling some of the world’s greatest challenges and helping to deliver better health, social justice and industrial competitiveness.

Professor Anthony Hollander, Pro Vice Chancellor for Research and Impact at the University of Liverpool, said: “Digital is a key research priority for the University of Liverpool and we are delighted to be part of the new Turing University Network that will enable us to develop better connections across the data science/AI landscape. We look forward to the many benefits, including access to both Turing and the vibrant, wider community which will ultimately accelerate our research and impact.”

Professor Alex Singleton, Digital theme research and innovation lead at the University of Liverpool, said: “We are thrilled to announce that the University of Liverpool has joined the Turing University Network, a testament to our institutional commitment to advancing the frontiers of data science, artificial intelligence, and their applications. This strategic partnership will help support our cutting-edge research, nurture the next generation of innovators, and transform our world for the better through collaboration and knowledge exchange.”

Donna Brown, Director of Academic Engagement at The Alan Turing Institute, said: “We’re delighted to launch a new UK-wide university network of data science and AI expertise via the Turing University Network. The network is crucial to successful delivery of the Institute Strategy, enables our role as a national convenor in the data science and AI landscape, and creates opportunity for meaningful collaboration where interests align across research and innovation, skills, and engagement.”
