The Book of the Dead: Passport through the Underworld

4 - 10 December 2017, 10am – 5pm
Tate Liverpool

Drop in and take a surreal journey through the Hours of the Night, where subconscious fears and dreamlike states come together in a dramatic funerary landscape. Images from papyri, captured by photographer Julia Thorne, are interpreted by Egyptology experts from the University of Liverpool, providing an insight into the beliefs of an ancient people.

Armed with a visual appreciation of the ancient Egyptian underworld and inspiration from the work of an established comic book illustrator, help us to interpret the ancient Egyptian Book of the Dead by illustrating its spells.

This workshop is a collaboration between the University of Liverpool’s Garstang Museum of Archaeology, Department of Archaeology, Classics and Egyptology, photographer Julia Thorne, and comic book artist, Leigh Gallagher. For more information contact Dr Gina Criscenzo-Laycock, Curator of the Garstang. For more details please see here.

This project is the latest in a series of Liverpool-Tate Exchange collaborations. Visit the School of the Arts website to find out how you can get involved.
