Background
Blae Stacey is an accelerator physicist whose research focuses on the development of novel beam diagnostics. She joined the QUASAR group in 2026, where her work combines radiative beam diagnostics with machine learning to improve these techniques.
Blae completed an integrated Master’s degree in Physics at the University of Leeds in 2022. During her undergraduate studies, she undertook a summer internship at DESY in Hamburg, where she worked on the development of a turn-key software stack for the ILC and CLIC projects, which sparked her interest in accelerator physics.
Afterwards, she began a PhD in Accelerator Physics at Universität Hamburg, focusing on the generation and diagnosis of ultrashort electron bunches at the ARES linear accelerator. Her research involved simulations of beam transport using ASTRA and Ocelot to identify operating conditions in which space-charge effects could be become advantageous in compression. She then measured the spectrum of coherent polarisation radiation at optical wavelengths to verify the generation of electron bunches with durations in the single-digit femtosecond range.
During her time at ARES, Blae also supported user experiments across accelerator R&D and medical physics. From 2024, she served as the elected Helmholtz Juniors representative for DESY Hamburg, contributing to initiatives aimed at improving training opportunities and support for doctoral researchers across Germany.
Alongside her research, Blae is developing pathways for technology and knowledge transfer to industry through the Enabling Partnerships for Innovation and Accelerator Technology Advancement (EPITA) project. She also supports the QUASAR Group with their outreach and communications work for the European Plasma Research Accelerator with eXcellence In Applications (EuPRAXIA) project.
