Alex finished his degree in Physics at the University of Liverpool in 2016. His final year project was the investigation of the Bekenstein experiment for the possible detection of quantum foam. He started his PhD in 2017 focussing on the design and implementation of an upgraded atom interferometer at the University of Liverpool, using Rubidium-85 to perform interferometry experiments. Work on the interferometer primarily involved the commissioning of an atomic launch optical system, using a moving molasses technique to simultaneously cool and launch atoms. An upgraded vacuum system was also designed as part of the upgrade and a high-power laser system was designed and implemented, making use of state-of-the-art frequency doubling techniques to achieve high-power laser output in the 780nm wavelength range.

In 2022, he joined the QUASAR Group as a postdoctoral researcher for the University of Liverpool. His work will be based at the Cockcroft Institute in Daresbury and will focus on the development of non-destructive beam monitors for particle accelerators. This will initially revolve around gas-jet based beam monitors allowing a transverse beam profile to be measured with minimal impact on the beam.
