I am a professor of cognitive and clinical neuroscience with a focus on visual neuroscience. To understand how signals from the retina map into higher-order appearance mechanisms I use behavioural methods, electrophysiology and functional brain imaging.
Understanding the computations the visual brain performs allows us to develop appearance models mimicking the human visual system which are useful in industrial, technological and medical applications.
After obtaining a Ph.D. at New York University in visual neuroscience, I worked as a post-doctoral researcher at the Institute of Ophthalmology (UCL). In 2001, I was awarded a Senior National Research Council Fellowship to work at NASA Ames (CA) on computational vision models. Since then I have held visiting professorships at the University of Regensburg and at the Computer Vision Centre at the University of Barcelona and an honorary professorship at the University of Science & Technology, Liaoning, China. I am a co-founder of a University of Liverpool spin-off company on hardware-free display calibration.
