The Introduction of the NHS Internal Market

On 5 December 2017, the project team held a witness seminar in London on the introduction of the NHS internal market in 1991, which introduced managed competition in the NHS, self-governing hospitals and GP fundholding.

The event brought together leading representatives of the medical profession, civil service, health services management, health economics and government to discuss the origins of the reforms, their aims and their impact. More information can be found on the events page.
