What were your main reasons for choosing to undertake postgraduate research at University of Liverpool?
I believe the University of Liverpool has what it takes to make me a leading researcher. We use innovative technology and there is collaboration within and between institutes. As part of the Russell group of Universities, I have access to great colleagues internationally, who are a source of motivation in my research journey.
Can you summarise your postgraduate research in a few sentences?
My research spans from Cell Biology through Cancer Biology to Personalised Medicine. Our laboratory utilises the flexibility of Drosophila melanogaster (Fruit Fly) to develop precise cancer models (the fly arsenal) which are used for high throughput genetic and drug screening.
How do you believe postgraduate research will help your career prospects?
My postgraduate research is a solid foundation for my career goal of working in cancer research. I am optimistic that utilising what I have learnt so far and what I will continue to learn during the course of my postgraduate study will shape my future for the best.
What advice would you give to anyone considering undertaking a PhD?
A PhD is not a one-way journey. It has ups and downs. When choosing a PhD, make sure you are in love with the project before starting it, this is key to a successful PhD. Also, discover other hobbies outside of academia which you enjoy, for example I am into dancing, table tennis and cycling. All these hobbies are my strength when experiments are not going as planned. Also failed experiments is part of Science; learning from that failure makes you a better scientist.
