Adam Lee
Adam started his PhD having completed both his undergraduate and Master’s in Applied Mathematics at the University of Liverpool.
What were your main reasons for choosing to undertake postgraduate research at the University of Liverpool?
Having studied at Liverpool for four years prior, returning to the university was an easy choice. The choice was made even easier by the opportunity to join the Centre for Doctoral Training in Distributed Algorithms. The chance to be involved with a group of like-minded researchers all working at the cutting edge of machine learning and data science was one I could not turn down.
Can you summarise your postgraduate research in a few sentences?
Many machine learning techniques struggle to adapt to increasingly large data, few more so than a probabilistic model called a Gaussian Process. My research involves exploring novel alternatives to the current state-of-the-art Gaussian Process applications on distributed compute architecture. This involves working along-side researchers with my industrial partner, GCHQ, as well as other students, post-docs, and lecturers within in CDT family.
What support have you received from the Liverpool Doctoral College?
The Liverpool Doctoral College Development Programme has helped me grow into my position as a postgraduate researcher here at the University of Liverpool.
How do you believe postgraduate research will help your career prospects?
My PhD is directly influenced by industry members. I am partnered with GCHQ and have regular communication with my industrial supervisor. This, alongside industry focused events and placements, will have exposed me to many opportunities in life after completing my PhD. Should that mean staying in academia, continuing my research or working in industry, the nature of this PhD will help me achieve my goals.
