Personal Statement
Dr Newsham is a Senior Lecturer in Orthoptics and Senior Fellow of the Higher Education Academy (Advance HE). Within Orthoptics he is the Postgraduate Lead and Director of Studies for the MSc Orthoptics (pre-reg) programme and within the Faculty is a member of the Faculty Health and Conduct Panel and Faculty Progress Committee. His research interests are centred on virtual reality in clinical education and paediatric ocular motility and visual function; particularly in the areas of amblyopia, suppression, diplopia and oculomotor control.
Beyond the university he holds and has held numerous important roles both within and beyond the profession:
Chair of the Local Organising Committee for the quadrennial International Orthoptic Congress 2022
Lead Visitor (External Validator) for the Health and Care Professions Council (Nov 2021-to date)
Investigating/Fitness to Practice Committee (Lay Panel Member) of the Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC) (July 2021 – to date).
Health & Care Professions Council (HCPC) Partner (Registrant Panel member for Fitness to Practice Panel) (Feb 2018 – to date)
