Research Overview

I am a Consultant Children's Orthopaedic Surgeon funded by the UK National Institute of Health Research (NIHR). I perform surgery at Alder Hey Children's Hospital in Liverpool.

My major research interest is in epidemiology and effectiveness research. This involves developing nationwide collaborative cohorts, clinical trials and the analysis of existing (routine) datasets. I was chief investigator on the NIHR British Orthopaedic Surgery Surveillance (BOSS) Study, the ARUK Sensing the Hips of Newborns (SHINE) Study and the ARUK Outcomes Research in Children’s Hip Disease (ORCHiD) Study. See www.studies.surgery

My clinical focus is in paediatric hip diseases and trauma - with Perthes' disease, Slipped Epiphysis and Developmental Dysplasia of the Hip (DDH) as key interests.

I a member of the NIHR HTA Commissioning Board and Associate Editor and member of the research methodology panel of the the Bone and Joint Journal. I also sit on the research committee of the British Orthopaedic Association (BOA), the research committee of BSCOS (British Society for Children's Orthopaedic Surgery) and the hip screening committee within the government NIPE (Newborn Infant Physical Examination) Programme. I review for a variety of journals (JAMA, Nature Scientific Reports, BMJ, BJJ, Trials). I also review grants for NIHR, and am chair of the steering committee, and data monitoring committee for several NIHR HTA trials.

I have won around £3.5m of research funding from NIHR, ARUK, BMA, Academy of Medical Sciences, the Perthes' Association, Alder Hey Charity, John Monk Research fund and industry.
