The Origins of the National Institute for Health Research

On 28 February 2018 IPHS staff, led by Dr Paul Atkinson, held a witness seminar in London on the origins of the National Institute for Health Research (NIHR).

This formed part of a parallel, University-funded project about the emergence of the present NHS R&D system, conducted outside the Wellcome-funded Governance of Health project. It is included here because the two projects support each other.

The event brought together health researchers, research managers, civil servants, NHS managers and others to discuss the events leading to the establishment of the NIHR in 2006. Two past Directors of NHS R&D attended, including Dame Sally Davies, who is now England's Chief Medical Officer.

A transcript of the event has now been published and is available here
