The CIPHA (Combined Intelligence for Population Health Action) project, led by the University of Liverpool’s Professor Iain Buchan in partnership with Mersey Care NHS Foundation Trust and Graphnet, has been named ‘Healthcare Project of the Year’ at the 2021 Bionow awards.

The awards support outstanding successes and achievements from companies and individuals and shine a spotlight on progress in the biomedical and life sciences sectors across the north of England.

The CIPHA team were presented with the award, sponsored by Mills & Reeve, at the Bionow Awards in-person ceremony on 31 March, 2022.

CIPHA has developed a cloud-based centralised data system that enables a connected approach to population health management. The project is recognised for enabling internationally important COVID-19 evidence and leaving a legacy of population health management linked to care workflow that brings data, analysts and public trust into a real-time actionable civic health information system.

The Bionow Investment Deal of the Year award went to University of Liverpool’s partner BiVictriX Therapeutics, a biotechnology company specialising in novel cancer therapies, which listed on AIM as an IPO and raised £7.5m in the process.

The University has been collaborating with BiVictriX for a number of years through various initiatives, including James Griffin’s (Department of Pharmacology and Therapeutics) joint PhD studentship, supervised by Dr John Woolley, Department of Pharmacology and Therapeutics and Professor Joseph Slupsky, Department of Molecular and Clinical Cancer Medicine. BiVictriX is headed by CEO and Founder, Tiffany Thorn, who became one of the youngest female CEOs of a UK-based publicly listed technology firm.

The Liverpool Covid-SMART Community Testing Pilot was also shortlisted for the Bionow Response to the COVID-19 Pandemic Award and the University of Liverpool spin-out company PhenUtest Diagnostics was shortlisted for the Bionow AMR Award.
