Hidden Histories: The Untold stories of James Town and Slavery

Motive

This project interrogates the continuing legacy of slavery in Jamestown and its representation on a local and national stage. Working with the Jamestown community . Jamestown walking tours and the Ussher Fort, the project aims to involve local artists and residents to create a performance and filmed walking tour of Jamestown that will engage the community in considering the continuing legacy of slavery in Jamestown.

Context

Use social memory to draw on activated community memory. Engaging directly with the community through a series of interviews, performances and drama workshops to explore and develop debate around the representation and legacy of slavery in James Town. Development of a digital walking tour to enable purposed sharing if the project to stretch beyond the geographical confines of Jamestown and add to a wider discourse on slavery.
