Postgraduate Research Student
Michiel has a BA in Political Science from the University of Amsterdam and a MA in Nationalism Studies from the University of Edinburgh.
Currently, Michiel is teaching seminars on the first-year module European Politics.
Michiel started as a PhD candidate in October 2018, supervised by Professor Erika Harris.
In his research, Michiel focuses on everyday experiences of nationalism and national or ethnic identification among high school students in Bosnia and Herzegovina. Being raised in a society that operates primarily along ethnic lines, high school students are faced with nationalist messages on a daily basis. Michiel aims to pay more attention to the ways in which students make sense of their ethnicized world, possibly through forms of everyday resistance.
Michiel’s research is funding by the University of Liverpool Graduate Teaching Fellowship.
