When I moved from Italy to New York city for my PhD, it wasn't easy to fit in at first. I had never been so far from home, my English was shaky at best, people kept excitedly telling me that they, too, were Italian, when they really meant they were from New Jersey, and one of the local cafeterias served pizza topped with... pasta??
I went to the maths department and was given a list of courses I would have to follow in my first year: they were subjects I knew and loved, and I was excited to learn more about them - and suddenly, I felt right at home. My mathematical journey has had ups and downs, and research can be frustrating and exhilarating in equal parts, but I hope mathematics will always feel like home to me.
