MA Philosophy Student Labeeba Miah has been appointed onto the BIPPA (British and Irish Postgraduate Philosophy Association) Executive Committee as their Democracy and Outreach Officer.

BIPPA is an association of postgraduate philosophy students in the United Kingdom and the Republic of Ireland. It was formed to provide an active community of support and advice for young philosophers, bridging geographical boundaries between different universities and departments. The BIPPA is best known for its Annual Conference and Careers Workshop, as well as for its Masterclasses.

Labeeba writes:

Coming from multiple marginalised communities myself, it is of utmost importance to me that we can widen participation in Philosophy. In my role I hope to reach out to people of marginalised backgrounds and encourage them to pursue Philosophy, as the best thing for Philosophy is for there to be more philosophers! In this role, I will make it my absolute purpose to ensure that voices of all members are listened to and accounted for. I will work to the best of my ability to not only represent those who are underrepresented but also give them their own platform to communicate about issues and concerns in the contemporary world of Philosophy.

As a community of philosophers, the BIPPA widely supports initiatives to encourage diversity within the discipline. All postgraduate philosophers are welcome to make use of the BIPPA’s resources and benefit from its services.

We wish Labeeba the best in her role and look forward to hearing about her work and that of the BIPPA
