Marine Law and Ocean Policy Research Services Ltd provides research, training and consultancy services in a broad range of marine disciplines. The company has its origin in the National University of Ireland and has a large network of associates, many of whom are leaders in their fields of expertise. The company employs four people and provides commissioned work in the following areas: the common fisheries policy; international and regional fisheries law; the ecosystem approach; the European Integrated Maritime Policy; marine scientific research and marine spatial planning. The Managing Director has participated in the work of the European institutions, the United Nations, the UNESCO/IOC’s Advisory Body of Experts on the Law of the Sea, various ICES Working Groups, and has recently been asked to contribute to the work of the United States Senate.

Key Personnel

Ronán Long is the Managing Director of Marine Law and Ocean Policy Research Services Ltd. He read for his PhD at the School of Law, Trinity College Dublin, and holds the Jean Monnet Chair of European Law at the School of Law, National University of Ireland Galway. Ronán is the author/co-editor of five books on oceans law and policy issues including: Enforcing the Common Fisheries Policy (Oxford, Blackwell Science, 2000 and reprint John Wiley 2008), Marine Resource Law (Dublin/London/Hong Kong, Thomson Round Hall, 2007) and Law, Science and Ocean Management (Boston/Leiden, Nijhoff, 2008). He worked previously for the European Commission (1994–2002), the Naval Service (1981-1994). He acts as an adviser/consultant on marine related issues and provides commissioned work to public and private bodies including state agencies, foreign governments, industry representative organisations and the European institutions. Over the past two decades, he has delivered over 70 international conference papers in 27 countries and for 8 international organisations. He has participated in a broad range of EU marine research projects since the early 1990s including HERMES and PROTECT. His current research focus is on the implementation of the ecosystem approach in the marine environment. He is a keen sailor and has represented Ireland at the top competitive level in ocean racing.
