Professor John Ellershaw


Professor Ellershaw has contributed to the development of specialist palliative care services in Liverpool since 1994, when he was appointed as Medical Director at the Marie Curie Hospice Liverpool and Clinical Director at the Directorate of Palliative Care at the Royal Liverpool University Hospital. He leads the development of palliative care education at the University of Liverpool and is also involved in the advancement of its research and development programmes. In November 2004 he became Director of the Marie Curie Palliative Care Institute, a partnership between the Marie Curie Hospice Liverpool, the University of Liverpool and Royal Liverpool University Hospitals created in recognition of the close working relationship between the three organisations and the expansion of the educational portfolio and research programme. From 2010 to 2013 he was the National Deputy Clinical Lead for End of Life Care and is currently the Clinical Lead for the Cheshire & Merseyside Palliative & End of Life Care Network.

Clinical & Research interests

Professor Ellershaw is the Clinical Director of the Specialist Palliative Care Directorate at the Royal Liverpool University Hospital.
His main research interests are care of the dying, ethics and medical education.


Professor Ellershaw leads the co-ordination of the palliative medicine component of the undergraduate medical education curriculum. He is also leading the development of the MSc in Palliative Medicine at the University of Liverpool.
