Welcome from the Head of Department

On behalf of the Department of Music and the School of the Arts, I am delighted to welcome you as a new student. You are about to join an academic department that embraces the full spectrum of music, one which feeds off and interplays with the musical legacies of its home city – a capital of culture. In the Department of Music we foster an open, transparent, inclusive, collegiate and supportive culture in which diverse contributions are valued. We hope that whatever your background you will quickly feel at home here.

You are joining the Department at a particularly exciting time, as we have just enjoyed our first full year making and sharing musical activity within the new campus concert hall, the Tung Auditorium, situated in the new Yoko Ono Lennon Centre. We are sure that you will want to take advantage of everything this world-class facility has to offer during your time with us.

As a Music student, you’ll be part of the School of the Arts, home to a wider community of scholars from five different disciplines. We are sure you will be inspired by and benefit from the breadth and vitality within the School of the Arts, with world-class teaching and in-depth specialist expertise available to you. The School also has a dedicated Student Support Centre who will help through your time at University.

You’ll find lots of useful information on the 'Welcome' pages - please do take the time to explore it all, and get in touch if you have any questions.

I very much look forward to welcoming you to the Department.

Professor Lisa Colton, Head of Music
