Women in Music at the University of Liverpool – Wednesday 10th March 2021
On Wednesday 10th March 2021, during the international week of women, the University of Liverpool Music Department hosted an interactive virtual day celebrating women leaders within the music industry. Among those struggling and more isolated than ever during the pandemic are the women music professionals of the future. While the full impact of COVID-19 on the music industry continues to be understood, we embraced the challenges of the moment with this virtual day which provided a platform for leaders of today to inspire the leaders of tomorrow.
This online event delved into pressing issues of equity and diversity that must be addressed to build a brighter, fairer, more inclusive and sustainable future for women in the music industry.

Zoom Session 1:
Opening remarks from the Head of the Music Department, Professor Catherine Tackley with a performance by the University of Liverpool’s ensemble-in-residence, the Solem Quartet.
Session 1: Dr Simran Singh Leverhulme Early Career Fellow at University of Liverpool and Dr Laura Colgate Executive Director of Boulanger Initiative address the following questions:
- How can decolonisation help us challenge inequity in the 21st century?
- How do we enrich our collective understanding of what music is, has been, and can be?
- The session will conclude with performances by the highly acclaimed a cappella vocal group Papagena and contributions from students of the University of Liverpool
Zoom Session 2:
Vick Bain former CEO of the British Academy of Songwriters, Composers and Authors and Rie Sinclair Emmy-nominated singer songwriter and producer address the following questions:
- What are the statistics for UK female musicians and how can we use these to support the next generation of women in music?
- What is the experience of women working as creative technicians in the music industry and how can aspiring women in music technology learn from this?
- This session includes a music industry-focused Q&A with MA students from the University of Liverpool
Zoom Session 3:
Lunchtime concert by the all-female string quartet, Equilibrium, performing music by Imogen Holst, Elizabeth Maconchy, Bethan Morgan-Williams and Caroline Shaw
Zoom Session 4:
Dr Margaret Anne Schedel Professor and Co-Director Computer Music Stony Brook University New York and Vanessa Reed President and CEO New Music USA
- What is the latest research into current practices of women in electronic music?
- How do we build a better and more inclusive industry using networks and resources, as well as inspire commitment from people of all genders?
- This session will conclude with performances by students of the University of Liverpool
Zoom Session 5:
This interactive day culminates with a Panel Discussion, chaired by Dr Holly Tessler of the University of Liverpool, featuring Janine Irons MBE, Margaret Anne Schedel, Vanessa Reed, Simran Singh, Rie Sinclair and Laura Colgate who debate how we chart a course that empowers the women music professionals of the future, during and post-COVID.
The virtual day will conclude with closing remarks from event co-producers Toni James and Ruth Minton, as well as a performance by the University’s Ensemble-in-Residence Solem Quartet.
