Personal Statement

Dr Nicola Bermingham is a specialist in sociolinguistics. Her research interests include migration studies, minority languages, and education. Dr Bermingham is currently working on a project entitled "Monolingual Schools in Multilingual Societies: An Exploration of Language and Education in Cape Verde". The project explores how the language of instruction in schools can act as a tool to reinforce socio-economic inequalities. Dr Bermingham has also conducted extensive research on language and immigration in Galicia, Spain.

Dr Bermingham welcomes applications from PhD candidates working in areas of sociolinguistics such as language and migration, multilingualism, and language ideologies.
