AHRC Theme Leadership Administrator Modern Languages and Cultures

Biography

Personal Statement

Will is currently researching in a developing sub-field of sociolinguistics, the Linguistic Landscape, which analyses the use and management of languages in public spaces. His particular interests lie in languages in contact, and the research for his PhD focusses on the multilingualism visible in the LLs of several French cities, where he is examining the treatment of the regional languages Occitan and Corsican, and their revitalisation by those who write and display signs. The project not only examines the actors (both official and independent) responsible for writing regional languages, but also seeks to understand better the social, commercial, and political contexts commonly used in language revival.
