About the event
This presentation features a research-connected activity for students of Italian and Portuguese at the University of Liverpool. The activity responds to the Transnationalizing Modern Languages (TML) Policy Document, Reframing Language Education for a Global Future, targeting specifically the key issues around developing cultural literacy in language education while challenging the association of language and nation. The aim of this experiment that has run for two consecutive years has been to enable students pursue transnational research in Modern Languages and to create an opportunity for them to mobilise their diverse linguistic and cultural skills in the place where they live and study.
Students are asked to form small groups and look for signs of Italian or Lusophone cultures present in their surroundings. They are invited to produce materials (either textual or visual/audio-visual) on the presence of multiple languages and cultural heritages in Liverpool which will feature on a social media page entitled Language Stories in Liverpool. This presentation will reflect on how, by opening up spaces for multilingual learning and writing, the proposed activity gears the ML curriculum towards transnational and flexible approaches, with an impact on the ability for learners to articulate cultural awareness. We will also compare the outcomes of the first and second year of this project.
