About the event

Public screening of That Night in Rio (1941), with an introduction by Christine Physick (The Plaza) and Professor Lisa Shaw (University of Liverpool, and author of the book Carmen Miranda [BFI/Palgrave Macmillan, 2013])

The Cinema, Memory and Wellbeing Festival will culminate on Thursday 17th October with an afternoon of celebrations at the Plaza centred on the Brazilian film star Carmen Miranda. The event is aimed at older people, especially those living with a dementia diagnosis, and those involved in their care. Participants will be invited to view the art work produced in the two creative workshops and to have their photographs taken with ‘aunt sallies’ of Carmen Miranda or Charlie Chaplin, to the sound of music from the 1940s and 50s, including Latin American rhythms. This will be followed by a screening of the Hollywood musical That Night in Rio (1941), which starred Carmen Miranda in her first English-speaking part. There will be a short interval when complimentary refreshments will be served.

All activities will take place at the Plaza Community Cinema. It is fully accessible. If you have any access requirements please contact Christine Physick either via email christine@plazacinema.org.uk or telephone on 0151 928 1530.
