Studying in Buenos Aires and Rio de Janeiro
The past year has without a doubt been the most amazing year of my life! Going from having never travelled outside of Europe to spending 5 months each in both Buenos Aires and Rio de Janeiro has been an incredibly transformative experience.

Any language student will be familiar with that oft-repeated tip from teachers: listening to podcasts in their target language. And with good reason – podcasts are a great way to practise listening skills while running on the treadmill or cleaning the house, and they are becoming increasingly popular.

Year Abroad Diary: October in Lyon
My October as an Erasmus student in Lyon started with a surreal trip to Paris for a weekend during Paris Fashion Week. One of the great things about Lyon is that it’s only a two hour train journey from Paris so if a visit to the capital city is on your agenda, it’s a relatively easy getaway to plan. As well as exploring the city I am based in on my year abroad, I think exploring different parts of the country is equally as, if not more, exciting, as they might not be as easily accessible in the future when living elsewhere. My friend Liv and I stayed in a little hotel near the Eiffel Tower for one night and spent two full days soaking up the Parisian lifestyle by visiting little cafés, doing a lot of window shopping, attending fashion shows and visiting the Eiffel Tower at night in a full on storm - that will always be a funny story to tell.

Year Abroad Diary: September in Lyon
As I prepared myself to move to Lyon at the end of August 2021, the end of UK summer, I can’t lie I was quite apprehensive. Although I’ve always been an adventurous person who loves travelling, the prospect of actually moving to a new country and leaving behind my friends, family and student life in Liverpool was daunting. However, as cliché as it sounds, within a week of living in Lyon my worries were melted away by the utter beauty, excitement and 30 degrees Celsius weather of the city. Moving to Lyon as the UK summer was fizzling out, I didn’t expect to be sucked into an even hotter, sunnier, French summer!

A look back at Iberian and Latin American Week - Feb 2021
Following this semester’s Peers-Iberian and Latin American Week (#Peers-IBLAW21), let’s look back at February 2021’s week-long events celebrating Iberian and Latin American languages and cultures. As ever, they were wide-ranging and included a variety of activities from the very popular Galician language and culture taster to academic and literary talks and the workshop Un Museo para Mi. We had amazing contributions from our students, Hollie and Laura. Both were active in the Modern Languages Society and went above and beyond in designing and running the Teleparty watch along evening and the Quiz night, which were both tremendous fun.

Get your Language and Culture Fix this Summer
If you’re planning to start a degree with us this year, there are plenty of ways you can get your language and film fix over the summer whilst doing a bit of preparation for your course. The Department of Languages, Cultures and Film has put together an extensive list of recommended resources in the list below. Some of these tie in directly with the modules you’ll be studying with us, as stated where applicable in the descriptions, but most are simply suggestions for broadening your appreciation and enjoyment of languages, cultures and film. Please don’t feel you have to purchase any resources as many will be available in the library or online when you arrive in Liverpool.

Our Language Graduates and their Dissertations
MLC finalists on the undergraduate dissertation module (MODL307) excelled themselves this year, producing a truly excellent set of projects on a wide range of research topics, from medieval representations of Joan of Arc to the social impact of neoliberal economic policies in contemporary Latin America. Each of the students involved carried out an independent research project of 10,000 words under the expert guidance of a staff member. Get your Language and Culture Fix this Summer
In the summer of 2020, many students’ travel plans have unfortunately had to be put on hold for the time being. However, if you are planning to start a degree in modern languages with us this year, there are still plenty of ways that you can get your language fix over the summer whilst doing a bit of preparation for your course. The Department of Modern Languages and Cultures have put together an extensive list of recommended resources for students looking for ways that they can prepare for starting their language studies with us this autumn. All recommended resources are purely suggestions for enjoyment over the summer, therefore do not feel you have to purchase any resources as many will be available in the library when you arrive in Liverpool.

The Boom of Feminism in Spain
The year 2018 represented a boom of feminism in Spain. Spain made a crucial progress in gender equality: thousands of people demonstrated for women’s equality, the government of Pedro Sánchez identified with being feminist: 11 out of 17 positions are in the hands of women, government priorities included agreements against gender violence and for work equality. Moreover, the government turned to the Real Academia Española regarding the 'inclusive' language in the Constitution.

3 international bands to see at Liverpool Sound City!
Liverpool is home to one of the biggest metropolitan music festivals in Europe! Liverpool Sound City will take over the Baltic area of the city this weekend (5 and 6 May), with more than 250 gigs spread across various venues; from acoustic and urban artists at cafés and bars to headlining bands and DJs in warehouses and clubs.
