Our Language Graduates and their Dissertations

MLC finalists on the undergraduate dissertation module (MODL307) excelled themselves this year, producing a truly excellent set of projects on a wide range of research topics, from medieval representations of Joan of Arc to the social impact of neoliberal economic policies in contemporary Latin America. Each of the students involved carried out an independent research project of 10,000 words under the expert guidance of a staff member. The following is a selection of some of the projects produced by our talented dissertation students this year:

Get your Language and Culture Fix this Summer

In the summer of 2020, many students’ travel plans have unfortunately had to be put on hold for the time being. However, if you are planning to start a degree in modern languages with us this year, there are still plenty of ways that you can get your language fix over the summer whilst doing a bit of preparation for your course. The Department of Modern Languages and Cultures have put together an extensive list of recommended resources for students looking for ways that they can prepare for starting their language studies with us this autumn. All recommended resources are purely suggestions for enjoyment over the summer, therefore do not feel you have to purchase any resources as many will be available in the library when you arrive in Liverpool.

It is always a highlight when we can welcome an external speaker to the Department of Modern Languages and Cultures. This semester, we invited the German author Kerstin Carlstedt who had an Amazon Bestseller before Christmas with her publication of 'Let’s play: Fortnite' (Carlsen: 2019), a selection of interviews with Germany’s favourite Fortnite YouTubers. Meanwhile, Kerstin Carlstedt’s first teenage novel 'Die Trolle von Shabby Sands' (forthcoming Fischer: 2020) is keenly awaited at the end of April.

We are always looking for new ways of sharing Iberian and Latin American culture with Liverpool audiences and enriching the experience of our students. Since 2006, we have organised a week of events and activities for students and the public, focusing on the Portuguese-speaking world and Spanish, Basque and Catalan-speaking cultures. This year we have put together a Liverpool Iberian and Latin American Film Festival, after being awarded the Spanish Film Club grant by the U.S. distributors PRAGDA.
