Researchers to present to Parliament for STEM for Britain

Three researchers from the University of Liverpool have been selected to attend Parliament on Monday, 6 March 2023 to present their research to politicians and expert judges as part of STEM for Britain 2023.
STEM for BRITAIN is a major scientific poster competition and exhibition which has been held in Parliament since 1997, and is organised by the Parliamentary & Scientific Committee.
It aims to give members of both Houses of Parliament an insight into the outstanding research work being undertaken in UK universities by early-career researchers.
This year, three University of Liverpool researchers have been shortlisted from hundreds of applicants to showcase their research.
Sean Edwards, a research associate from the Department of Mathematical Sciences, will present his poster in the mathematical session on mathematical modelling of drug transport through oral tissues.
Devon Crouch, from the Department of Eye and Vision Science, will present his poster “Stop Thief! Using Biomaterials to Tackle Glaucoma” in the biological and biomedical sciences session of the competition.
Also in the biological and biomedical sciences session, Rebecca Evans, from the Department of Psychology, will present her poster on the extent, nature and impact on adolescents of food marketing via videogame livestreaming platforms.
The posters in each discipline will be judged by leading academics and expert representatives with gold, silver and bronze prizes awarded to the posters that best communicate high level science, engineering or mathematics to a lay audience.
Stephen Metcalfe MP, Chairman of the Parliamentary and Scientific Committee, said: “This annual competition is an important date in the parliamentary calendar because it gives MPs an opportunity to speak to a wide range of the country’s best young researchers.
“These early career engineers, mathematicians and scientists are the architects of our future and STEM for Britain is politicians’ best opportunity to meet them and understand their work.”
The Parliamentary and Scientific Committee runs the event in collaboration with the Royal Academy of Engineering, the Royal Society of Chemistry, the Institute of Physics, the Royal Society of Biology, The Physiological Society, the Nutrition Society and the Council for the Mathematical Sciences, with sponsorship from Dyson Ltd, Clay Mathematics Institute, United Kingdom Research and Innovation, Warwick Manufacturing Group, AWE, British In Vitro Diagnostics Association, the Society of Chemical Industry, Institute of Biomedical Science, the Heilbronn Institute for Mathematical Research, and the Biochemical Society.
