About the event

The theme of the workshop is “Developing an undergraduate mathematics curriculum which is fit for purpose – challenges and opportunities”. The workshop will focus on initiatives to develop an undergraduate mathematics curriculum at a time when there are constantly shifting priorities (in both higher education and industry). Specifically, the workshop will explore the challenges of providing a satisfying and stimulating experience for undergraduate students which also successfully equips them with the unique mathematical thinking and problem solving skills which are sought after by graduate employers.

There will be a focus on the opportunities which these challenges present for pedagogic innovation, and on the speakers’ experiences of developing successful initiatives. These experiences will cover topics such as embedding employability within taught mathematics modules, and the introduction of alternative methods of assessment such as project work, reflective writing and online assessments.

External speakers include Dr Peter Rowlett (Sheffield Hallam University), Dr Martyn Parker (Keele University), Dr Pamela Docherty (University of Edinburgh) and Dr Amir Asghari (Liverpool John Moores University). The workshop will also introduce the Mathematics Centre for Enhancement in Education at the University of Liverpool. The event will be of interest to anyone involved in mathematics teaching and student support in higher education.

This event is supported by an IMA HE Teaching and Learning Series Award and the organisers thank the IMA for this generous support.
