The University’s Materials Innovation Factory  has won the 'Design Through Innovation' category  at the annual Royal Institute of Chartered Surveyors (RICS) Awards.

The Materials Innovation Factory will now go forward to compete against other regional winners at the national RICS Awards Grand Final in November in London.

Commenting on the MIF, the judges said: “The product of a unique partnership between the University of Liverpool and Unilever, the Materials Innovation Factory provides cutting-edge, ultra-flexible, chemistry research facilities housed in a striking raw steel and concrete facility.

"Designed to reflect the creative process, the building promotes innovation and discovery, creating connections and opportunities for chance collaboration between spaces.  The facilities are quickly adaptable to evolving needs and clever, bespoke equipment solutions drive efficiency in use and achievement of a BREEAM excellent rating."

The £68M Materials Innovation Factory, which will be officially opened later this year, is revolutionising materials chemistry research and development by drawing together world-leading, multi-disciplinary research expertise, unparalleled technical facilities and a dynamic support infrastructure.

This is the second design award for the MIF which also won`Development of the Year’ at last year’s Northwest Business Insider’s Liverpool City Region Property Awards.

The facility is a unique public-private partnership between Unilever and the University of Liverpool supported by the Higher Education Funding Council for England, as part of the UK Government’s Research Partnership Investment Fund.
