A great way you can start to prepare is to develop a mindset about the challenges and opportunities that companies face when they internationalise, as well as impacts from international competition. You could do that by reading the Financial Times, the Economist and similar newspapers and websites.
Thinking about issues explored in news articles and on the websites mentioned will help you to tune in with the content of the International Management programme. Further to this, if you are thinking of specific books that could widen your thinking and challenge your way of seeing and understanding the world, I would also recommend the following:
- Why nations fail: the origins of power, prosperity and poverty. By Acemoglu, D. and Robinson, J.
- The new Climate war: the fight to take back our planet. By Michael Mann
- The Silk Roads: A new history of the world by Frankopan, P.
Welcome Week timetable
Welcome Week is Monday 21 to Friday 25 September, which is filled with talks, activities and socials where you can meet your Director of Studies, your coursemates and the wider Management School staff. Download the timetable* to find out more (uploaded Thursday 13 August). *Timetables are subject to change so please keep checking back for updates.
Looking to learn a new language?
All students have the opportunity to learn a language (Basque, Catalan, Chinese, French, German, Italian, Portuguese or Spanish), either as part of their degree programme or as an extra-curricular activity. Learning a new language offers you insight, not only into the language but also into the rich history and culture of the country(ies) where the language is spoken.
Watch this YouTube video to find out more about learning languages at Liverpool. Alternatively, if you have any questions about studying a language alongside your degree programme, contact the Open Languages Team.
Advice from a recent graduate

Lucia Lawson: BA International Management with a Year in Industry
Top three tips for University:
1) Make the most of the support available. The Careers Studio was invaluable to me when applying for placements; they helped me craft my CV and cover letters, and even ran mock interviews and assessment centre preparation sessions. Having that tailored, one-to-one support made a real difference when it came to the placement application process, and helped me get my Year in Industry placement with L'Oréal.
2) Consider doing a placement year. It was an incredible experience, one I'd wholeheartedly recommend to any student who has the opportunity to do one.
3) Get excited about studying in Liverpool! There is just so much to do here; the list really is endless. From the restaurants and bars to the shops, the culture, the music scene, Sefton Park, Lark Lane... Liverpool has something for everyone.
