Top three tips for University:

1. Go out and explore.
2. Make as many friends as possible.
3. Sign up to everything at Fresher’s Fair and grab as many freebies as you can carry!

Why did you choose to study at the University of Liverpool Management School?

I chose to study here for a number of reasons. Firstly, it was the only Open Day where I felt strongly enough to want to sign up there and then. The general atmosphere of the School and the friendliness of the students and members of staff made the whole experience memorable. I also chose the University of Liverpool because it is a member of The Russell Group, a group of prestigious research-focussed Universities in the UK.

Why did you choose your course?

I chose Accounting & Finance with a Year in Industry as I knew that it was a degree that would offer many opportunities. I’ve always had a love of numbers and a keen interest in the business world so this course allows me to merge the two. A definite highlight of studying Accounting & Finance here is that the course offers the maximum number of exemptions from the main Chartered Accounting organisations, including 12 exemptions from the ICAEW and 9 exemptions from ACCA. Gaining these exemptions will help me secure a job after graduating and certainly make me stand out from the crowd.

What skills have you developed?

At ULMS you develop a plethora of skills no matter what degree you study here, such as time management, communication and teamwork.  University allows people the opportunity to find out who they truly are as a person, and also offers experiences that cannot be had anywhere else; I can honestly say that this is something the University of Liverpool truly excels at.

How have you handled any of the challenges at University?

The friends I’ve made at university have helped me with many things.  Joining a sports club and various societies has helped too. I was a bit overwhelmed when I first arrived but the friends I’ve made helped me through it. The best thing to remember is that everyone is in the same boat as you and you’re not alone.

How have you found the learning experience to be?

I have really enjoyed the learning experience at university. Whilst there is a lot of independent learning that you might not have experienced in sixth form or college, support is always available if you need it; don’t be afraid to ask for it.

Is University different to what you expected?

I knew before starting University that there is a lot of independence and that it can be quite tiring at times but it’s also the most fun you’ll ever have. I was surprised at how easy it is to make friends; you just need to leave your room and start chatting to someone.

How will a placement prepare you for work after university?

I’m really looking forward to my placement as it will give me a true insight into how my studies and knowledge will be used in the real world of work.

What are your future career goals?

I aspire to become a Chartered Accountant after graduation. After becoming Chartered, I’d either like to become a partner in an accounting firm or set up my own accountancy practice.

What advice would you give to someone thinking of taking year in industry?

Do it! Statistics show – sorry, my inner accountant is coming out - that those who spend a Year in Industry generally get a higher classification of degree than those that don’t. It’s also an amazing experience that could land you with a place on a graduate scheme with your host company. And you also get paid!

What have you enjoyed most about your student experience?

What I’ve enjoyed most is meeting many like-minded people and making friends for life. At University you meet people from all walks of life, some similar to your own background, others completely different. I’ve enjoyed making friends with people from across the globe.

What clubs and societies are you involved in?

I’m Captain of the Archery Club and I also joined the comedy and poker societies, both of which I’d highly recommend!

What do you get up to when you're not studying?

When I’m not studying, running the Archery Club takes up a lot of my time. I’m also a Brand Manager for Camp America which keeps me busy. When I find a spare second to stop and relax, however, I love to go to comedy nights in the Guild, walk around Liverpool, go out with friends and have a few pints in the pub.

What have you enjoyed about living in Liverpool?

I love Liverpool! Everything that you could possibly want is within walking distance of campus and the people of Liverpool are lovely.
