MSc Business Analytics and Big Data

I have used the MSc skills enhancement sessions which are of great use when stepping back into academic studies./em>

What were you doing before you began MSc study?

I work as a contractor for within the Marine & Offshore industry helping oil majors like Shell, Exxon, understand the engineering risks associated with some of the specialist ships they utilise within the offshore oil exploration process. The ships use a technology called dynamic positioning where a ship can stay in one position using its own propellers rather than anchors. This involves complex industrial & control automation, power generation and electrical distribution. I also developed a digital competency management system for the offshore industry which uses smart cards instead of paper log books for documenting operators experience whilst working on these specialist ships. This development came about after being General Manager for one of the leading dynamic positioning training providers and seeing issues around fraudulent applications that I felt could be better managed.

Why did you choose to study at the University of Liverpool Management School?

The University of Liverpool has an incredible reputation and is located in a city of bootstrapping Entrepreneurs and startups, so it really is the ideal place to study a program like mine.

Why did you choose to study an MSc at the Management School?

I studied for by BA in legal and business studies at the University of Liverpool graduating back in 2006. Part of the degree was taught by the management school so I knew that it had an excellent reputation.

Did you receive a scholarship?

I received a future leaders scholarship based on my application detailing the work I undertook on the concept, development and implementation of the digital competency management system. It was a real surprise to be awarded the scholarship. I feel very fortunate to have been awarded it.

Which aspects of the MSc course do you think will be most beneficial to your career development?

I believe the modules studied on the Business Analytics and Big Data programme will provide me with a solid foundation on which to apply the knowledge gained in many industrial fields as analysis of big data and understanding business modelling are becoming the key differentiator for businesses to succeed. By gaining these skills I believe I will be ahead of the curve in terms of management applications and leading business.

Have you received help and advice from the School’s MSc Careers Advisor?

No at present, I have used the MSc skills enhancement sessions which are of great use when stepping back into academic studies after a long break. The team providing this support are excellent.

Will you be undertaking a placement as part of your programme?

The programme offers the option for working on a project undertaken within the management school as the final part of the course, or completing business game modules, both of which sound interesting. Final decision on acceptance for the project is based on semester one grades with the Management school inviting studies with requisite grades.

What have you enjoyed most about living in Liverpool?

I first arrived in Liverpool back in 1993 studying for a HND in Marine Technology at Liverpool John Moores University. After graduating I have been very fortunate to have lived in America and Asia but have always returned to Liverpool, it has always had a strong pull we even ensured our children were born in Liverpool. It has been great to see the city develop into what it is now, not many places can beat it. Friendly, Open and always welcoming.
