    Personal Statement

    I am the Subject Group Head of the Strategy, International Business and Entrepreneurship group (SIBE) and Professor in Strategic Management and Entrepreneurship. I joined University of Liverpool Management School in 2017 after being Professor at the Faculty of Economics and Business Administration (FEWEB) of Vrije University Amsterdam. I was for over 10 years the Head of the Department of Management and Organization. I have studied in the United States and have done parts of my doctoral work in Economics at the European Institute in Florence, Italy. Previously I worked at the Rotterdam School of Management and had a part-time chair in Innovative entrepreneurship at Wageningen University (1997-2002). I have been visiting professor at the Copenhagen Business School (1996), at Mays Business School, University of Texas A&M (2006), at the Aarhus School of Business (2008), at University of Alabama (2010), and at University of Bologna (2011 and 2012).

    My research interests include corporate entrepreneurship and venturing, networking in emerging organizations, strategic entrepreneurship, and managing service innovation. I have published over 50 international articles/book chapters in Journals, such as, Academy of Management Journal, Journal of Business Venturing, Journal of Business and Psychology, Long Range Planning, Organization Studies, Scandinavian Management Journal, Journal of Business Research, Scientometrics, Technovation and Small Business Economics. I have published seven books, the latest Corporate Entrepreneurship and Venturing (2005, Springer). My H-index is 28 (Scholar) and I have over 5200 (Scholar) citations. My edited book Rethinking Strategy (Sage) has won the ERIM best book award and I received the Emerald Management Reviews Citations of Excellence Award in 2012 and in 2017 for respectively my article in AMJ (with Wouter Stam) and in JBV (with Wouter Stam and Souren Arzlanian).

    My research has been funded by NOW (National Scienc Foundation, the Netherlands), KNAW (Royal Academy of Science, the Netherlands, ESF (European Science Foundation), Ministry of Economic Affairs, and companies, in total of over 750.000 Euro. I have been member of the strategy group of the Ministry of Economic Affairs on ‘Innovation in services’, chairman of the board of Syntens Rotterdam, chairman of the board of Innovatie Steunpunt Wageningen, vice-president of EDAMBA, and member of the board of EUDOKMA. I am member of the Strategic Management Society, Academy of Management, and EGOS and been member of the organizing committee of the 24th EGOS Colloquium in Amsterdam (2008) with over 1200 participating scholars. I have been chairing/convenor of many workshops at the annual conferences of the Academy of Management and EGOS.

    Supervising PhD students has been one of my core activities; 25 of them successfully completed their PhD. Many of them were part of my research program on networking and entrepreneurship, resulting in joint top publications in AMJ and JBV. I am an experienced teacher, responsible for courses in bachelor, master, MBA, and PhD programs of Erasmus University, Wageningen University and VU University. In addition, I teach regularly in executive and leaderships programs.
